Arne Slot Asserts He Feels Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was expected for questions to be asked about his position following a further heavy defeat versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their 9th defeat in twelve matches, representing the club's poorest streak since being demoted in 1953-54.
They were taken apart by the Eredivisie title holders on a difficult night at their home ground.
“I feel secure, things are alright, I have got a lot of backing from management,” Slot remarked.
“It would be great to reverse this trend and secure a win obviously but if you are working as a coach and not doing well then it is normal that questions are asked.”
He continued, “I am OK with my role. It is not the first time I've found myself in a challenging situation but it's crucial that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to provide details on his dialogues with the team officials, Slot revealed:
“We talk a lot. They are helpful to the team and to me and those talks happen but they aren't calling me all the time each day to say they back me.”
He added, “Through standard discussions I sense the belief. However I haven’t spoken to them after this match yet so we'll see.”
Persistent Problems and Player Response
The manager lamented familiar failings from his squad in their European defeat, specifically wasted chances and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was blunter in his view of the club’s predicament.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I don’t. I'm telling that to all,” Jones stated.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to think about it. I’m past being angry internally. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He went on, “It's tough because I play for the side I follow. I support them, and I've watched this club for years.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team experiencing a phase like this with outcomes this poor.”
Jones finished, “But we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And until it is gone, we'll continue to battle.”
“Our aim is to help the side return to the top, demonstrate to all again what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the greatest side in the world.”
“However currently, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
