England to Begin Euro 2028 Quest at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
The England national team will commence their 2028 European Championship journey at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they achieve the expected qualification for a tournament hosted across the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not staged an England men’s game since the spring of 2016, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to stage the England side for their inaugural game on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are scheduled to play their final two group matches at Wembley, but, if they top the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would occur at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the knockouts at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Tournament Launch and Protest
The event was inaugurated at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were confronted as they approached the venue by approximately 50 protesters, who urged Israel’s national side to be kicked out from the sport because of the situation in Gaza.
Signs were held up with slogans saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Schedule
The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be staged at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a fixture that will feature the Dragons if they secure a place.
Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a start time at late afternoon.
It is anticipated that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will cater to family audiences and help reach a wider spectrum of viewers.
Qualifying Teams
The Republic of Ireland are due to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and Scotland would follow suit at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
Each host nation’s squad will enter the qualifying tournament; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that do not reach Euro 2028 through the standard process.
Locations and Knockout Stage
The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches played at every host’s main arena.
The qualifying draw will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a host city last year when it was revealed Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.
