American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays caused by weather and other issues.

Over 3,000 US flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary said he expects the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports said flights would be held up due to a lack of employees - one of the highest since the shutdown started.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the number of planes in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my staff focused on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," the official stated.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, causing interruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as other flights extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The FAA alert was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Many flights were operating normally by midday.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were postponed an mean of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the authority indicated DFW, the second most active airport in the US, could experience problems from low staffing in the afternoon.
