Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Jail Diary Chronicling Three Weeks Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a personal account next month titled Diary of a Prisoner, chronicling his experience served in custody.

The revelation came less than two weeks after the ex-leader gained freedom while he appeals the guilty verdict on charges of criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to obtain political financing from the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Time in Custody: Personal Reflections

“In prison visibility is limited, with little to occupy time,” he notes in a preview, implying the memoir centers around his musings while in seclusion instead of extensive analysis regarding the strained and struggling correctional facilities in the country.

“Silence escapes me, which is missing in that facility, where one hears constant sound,” he adds. “The racket unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, inner life is strengthened in prison.”

Release Hearing: Describing the Ordeal

At his release request hearing, he was present by video link from a room in prison, describing his time inside as draining. He expressed in court: “I must acknowledge those working in the jail, displaying remarkable compassion, easing this nightmare tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”

“It never crossed my mind that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a hardship that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It has an impact all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, set a precedent as former head from the EU and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Before entering jail he declared he intended to spend the period for authoring a memoir.

Reading Material

It remains unclear whether he had time to go through the texts he had in his cell: a life story of Jesus spanning two books and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, in which a wrongfully accused individual ends up incarcerated later flees to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

The former leader remained secluded to protect him in a space approximately nine square meters with his own shower and toilet in the Paris jail in Paris. Guards stayed in an adjacent room.

Sources mentioned that he consumed just yogurt in prison due to concerns any food might have been spat on. Options were available for self-catering yet he declined, as per accounts. Not known is if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Legal Perspective

The legal representative, who visited his client each day while he was in prison, told the release hearing security would be better out of prison compared to inside. “He has faced threats against his life, listened to yells during nighttime and emergency responses next door during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Legal Proceedings

He entered custody on 21 October when a Paris court imposed five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in connection with efforts to secure political donations for his 2007 presidential race.

He denies wrongdoing challenging the decision, and a fresh trial is scheduled for the coming spring.
