New research indicates that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
