The Gory Animated Movie Conclusion That Haunts Viewers
Among every mature animated films I’ve personally viewed, no other has remained with me quite like the terror-laced ending of a graphically gory and deeply subversive film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spain-based writer-director crafted a dark, melancholy and often savage world with several minor , forlorn glimmers of hope.
While Unicorn Wars seems like it stemmed from an impulse to advance animation further, the director explained that it was actually an attempt to express a widespread, multicultural message regarding “the mutual source of all wars.”
That idea is communicated by means of a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously inspired by a famous line of cuddly characters.
Growing up in a culture centered on aggression and the war machine, a lot of the bears are obsessed with slaughtering the mythical beasts, due to a sacred text that claims them they used to be masters of the woodland, until these creatures forced them out.
A few did not entirely bought into the propaganda, and would rather sample substances and fornicate outdoors.
In contrast to their gentle counterparts, these bright beings show sexual organs and clear libidos.
For one notably brutal, cynical bear, the bear named Bluey, the battle with the unicorns turns into a path to power — and especially to authority above his more tender, nicer brother the bear Tubby.
This bear behaves aggressively , an obvious sociopath , and while terror dominates his squad and claims his fellow soldiers individually, he grabs increasingly power on his own behalf, through ever more violent, harmful methods.
Simultaneously, these mythical beings are suffering their own nightmare, as a growing, destructive monster in their forest.
“Initially, it appears as a comedy,” the director said. “However it evolves into a more serious and sorrowful movie. And in the finale, it transforms into a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like one of the most quirky features by an iconic filmmaker, that discover a naughty glee in allowing drawn beings swear, shoot each other, or have intimate relations.
Then it turns into closer to a darker film by that same creator, including ever more visual gore and a tangible link to the actual tragedy of battle.
Ultimately, it’s a full-on theatrical horror carnage.
The fear that makes this an ideal spooky-season viewing begins much sooner than one might expect.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted lovers of violence, for fans of intense movies who want to see something they have not seen on-screen before, and can endure a story that pulls no restraint.
