The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Parent Company Prevented Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company alongside his partner, revealed that he plans to personally create the controversial product as part of an individual series highlighting issues the company was barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Between Creators versus Corporate Owner
This latest announcement escalates the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders have asserted how Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Flavor as an Emblem of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed via an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions for naming options and additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of support for Palestinians due to its colors, which match those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.
The new product line will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes plus Future Plans
The founder revealed how he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, following decades with the organization, citing concerns that the company's autonomy had been compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked that "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence so that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
