The Two Fatalities Identified in the Ivy League School Attack as Authorities Press On With Hunt for Gunman.

The pair of scholars who lost their lives in Saturday’s tragic incident on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their assailant carried on following the release by Rhode Island officials of the sole person questioned in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was called “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which honored her memory at a gathering on Sunday.

Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, according to the organization. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also expressed condolences online, stating: “It's indescribable. Keeping in mind her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”

The Second Victim

The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the renowned school, family members said.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.

What Happened

Nine other people were wounded in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Officials stated by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a raid at a hotel about around 27 kilometers from the campus earlier in the day was released from custody.

“There is a killer at large,” declared Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you need to change course and go in another, and this is precisely what occurred over the last approximately one day.”

Public Fear

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our community”.

The shooter opened fire inside a classroom in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a handgun, a police source reported to the media outlet.

Officers that raided the hotel found two firearms and two loaded 30-round magazines when the suspect was arrested, the news agency reported.

Condition of the Injured

Of the nine hurt, a single scholar was allowed to go home, said Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and another was critically ill, authorities stated on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private academy in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the club. “She was famed for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she worked for her branch and peers,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the student's death in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to Mr Umurzokov’s family, friends, and schoolmates and grieve for of his bright future.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US higher education institution with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to statistics.
