This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
