Uncovered Emails Show Jeffrey Epstein and Summers as Trusted Friends
Numerous exchanges between found guilty offender Jeffrey Epstein and one-time US finance chief Larry Summers came to light this week, showing the pair acted as trusted allies.
These exchanges, dating from 2013 to early 2019, demonstrate the two men discussing personal â and at times improper â views on politics and personal connections.
I'm struggling to understand why [the] American elite feel if u murder your baby by beating and neglect it must be irrelevant to your entry to Harvard,â|âIâm trying to|I am attempting to|I'm struggling to} determine why [the] American elite feel if u take the life of your baby by beating and desertion it must be irrelevant to your entry to Harvard,â} Summers stated to Epstein in a 2017 message. However flirted with a few women 10 years ago and canât work at a network or think tank. DO NOT REPEAT THIS IDEA.â
During that period, Harvard University was dealing with an acceptance debate after a formerly incarcerated womanâs enrollment to a PhD program. Summers, a one-time president of the university who lost his position amid a controversy after making sexist comments about women scholars, added in the message to Epstein: I noted that half of the IQ in [the] world was possessed by women without stating they are more than 51 percent of society.â
Summers was once a prominent figure in Democratic circles â a former treasury secretary in the Clinton administration, one of the primary architects of Barack Obamaâs approach to the economic downturn, and a committed voice in the liberal commentariat. But doubts have remained about his relationship with Epstein, a former contact of Donald Trump. Epstein was accused of a wide-ranging child sex trafficking operation before his death in jail in 2019 in New York City.
Following the release of a previous tranche of emails between Epstein and Summers in a 2023 piece, a representative for Summers said that he âis very sorry for being in contact with Epstein after his legal findingâ.
Democratic Party lawmakers made public emails from the Epstein estate this week that imply Epstein was of the opinion Trump was had knowledge of conduct by the now-convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell. In response, Conservative lawmakers published a larger collection of 20,000 emails from the Epstein estate.
The released materials show that Summers kept up amicable contact with the adjudicated child sex trafficker well into 2019, with the last email exchange occurring only months before Epsteinâs apprehension.
Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday that he would be requesting the Department of Justice and the FBI to examine Epsteinâs âparticipation and associationâ with Summers, among other prominent Democratic figures and industry figures.
In the emails, Summers and Epstein converse on politics â especially Summersâs disdain for Trump â as well as the particulars of philanthropic social networking â and women. Summers, 70, disclosed to Epstein in a 2019 exchange about his overtures toward an unidentified woman, and being turned down.
âshes smart. making you pay for past errors,â Epstein replied in an exchange on 16 March. âdisregard the 'daddy' comment, I'm going out with the motorcycle guy, you handled it well.. irritation indicates concern., no complaining demonstrated strength.â
Summers affirmed his regret in a recent statement. âThere are many things I regret in my life,â he commented. âAs I have said before, my association with Jeffrey Epstein was a major error of judgement.â
Summers was president of Harvard University from 2001 to 2006. Epstein donated more than $9m to Harvard and its affiliated programs between 1998 and 2008, and was named a visiting fellow to perform research. The university later concluded Epstein âwas missing the academic qualifications visiting fellows normally possess and his application suggested a course of study Epstein was not prepared to pursueâ.
Harvard only discontinued accepting Epsteinâs donations after he pleaded guilty to child sex offenses in 2008.
By that time Obamaâs star was rising. Summers would eventually win appointment as director of the White House economic advisory body from January 2009 until November 2010.
After Summers left the White House, he began soliciting Epstein for non-profit advice for his wife, Elisa New, a Harvard professor working on a poetry project. Epstein and his foundations made charitable contributions to projects associated with Summersâs wife, and the two men met a multiple times between 2013 and 2016, often for dinner.
After news about Epsteinâs donations came out, Newâs charity made a donation âabove and beyondâ of that received to anti-sex-trafficking organizations.
